five things, may 10 edition

1. I think I can't believe baseball is over for the year. Part of me is certainly relieved. But the bigger part of me will miss the rhythm of baseball days. We got into a good one, dealing with practices and games, laundry and quick & easy suppers. Being on a team is such a good thing for a kid. It's really good for my son. He didn't play as much as he wanted, but this was such a great group of boys and a terrific set of coaches. It was a pretty awesome season, all things being equal. So yeah, I like getting home two hours (or more) earlier each night, but I sure do miss what this experience did for my boy.

2. I think there are many more habits I'm trying to start and break. Here are a few: I would like to spend a day in the studio once a week. I would like to sweep the kitchen every night while Neel does the dishes. I would like to stop turning on the TV as soon as I get up in the morning (I like the news.). I would like to drink my coffee outside on the weekends. These are some of the little things. There are bigger ones, of course. Duh. But it's baby step time, people. Who is with me? Who wants to hold me accountable? Wink, wink.

3. I think it's been kind of a rough week, actually. There have been some definite highs. Dinner with some girlfriends I haven't seen in literally YEARS. Now that was nice. Sometimes your lives drift apart from each other and there's no real going back. You might "like" each other's posts on facebook here and there, but for the most part the connection is gone. With these guys, it felt just normal and right to be back in each other's company. I'm grateful. Another bright spot this week has been the internet, which I love. Where else can you have friends whose videos you cry over, friends who offer (out of the blue) to make things for you and friends who really get you... and can show how much through their talent with the pen. I really, really feel blessed and grateful. Our sweet Thea was back at the vet yesterday for a recheck and she faces a long road to recovery, I'm afraid. We're very worried about the dynamic among our dogs here at the house. My friend Jackie is facing a health crisis is one of her critters and every where I turn it seems that there's some fresh new sadness. And yet. It's important to remember that I'm blessed and grateful. Because I am.

4. I think that I have fallen truly, madly, deeply in love with my new lens. Truly. Madly. Deeply. I know, it's the photographer, not the gear, blah, blah, blah. But sometimes you get a piece of equipment that helps you see things in a new way, and I think this lens might be that for me. I played around in the studio some on Thursday, and while I still have a lot to learn, it felt like every photo was a revelation. I'm excited. It feels good.

5. I think we're low-keying it again for Mother's Day. We always have brunch, and I'm still trying to figure out what to do for the rest of the day. Not cook is one thing. Take pictures is another. I'd like a nice day and to have some fun, but I just haven't landed on what I want to do. Anybody have any fun plans? Any suggestions for me? What do you think I should do?

water {life}

I told you awhile back about reading The Power of Habit. I loved that book, as many of you have, and it continues to resonate with me. Neel's reading it now, and he's thoroughly digging into better understanding the elasticity of the mind. Pretty cool stuff. So, as you may have guessed, I'm trying to change some habits here and there, starting with some little things. The easy to tackle stuff. Who doesn't need to drink more water, right?

For Habit #1 I've been trying to drink a cup of water first thing, before I get going on my day. I'm generally up before everyone, so as soon as I get down to the kitchen, I pour myself a cup of water in my "Evans Poston for Commissioner of the Revenue" mug and resolve to finish it before Neel arrives to make coffee. I'm mostly successful. Mostly. Some mornings my mug gets finished before we head up to get Callum rolled out of bed, and some mornings my mug gets finished before everyone gets rolled out the door. Still, it gets done and consumed before anything else.

Habit #2 is a bit more fun. A few weeks back, I breezed past a recipe that someone had posted on Facebook for an infused water, one of those "Lose Weight Now!" things. I don't put a lot of stock in those claims, so I never clicked on the recipe itself to see what the real promises were, but the basics stuck in my head. Three eight ounce cups a day of water infused with the following: 1 cucumber sliced, 1 slice of grapefruit, 1 segmented tangerine and a bunch of mint. I actually don't have a problem drinking water throughout the day, but it never hurts to be more intentional about it, and this recipe sounds nice. I've been a fan of cucumber water for ages, especially since my friend Seamane and I had it at the Williamsburg Spa several years ago. So I thought I'd give this a go. With my first batch, I layered the grapefruit on top and it ended up a bit bitter, so with the second batch the cukes went on top and it was just right. Mild, fruity, and more flavorful as the week went on. Easy to get those three cups a day. Well, easy enough, I guess. I might still be working on this habit too, actually.

But no matter what, more water is good, right? Are you guys getting enough? What things are you doing to mix it up and make sure you get enough? And what about your habits? Any goood ones going? Anything you're trying to get rid of? Don't even get me started on those!

Field Day, 2013 {life}

We haven't really lived here that long. In this town, ten years is, well, nothing. Some towns are like that. All of California, for example, is not. Virginia, well. Virginia likes its history. That's okay. We like history and we like Virginia too. But it can make a difference, how long you've been in a place, and we've been in our town only ten years and at Cal's school much less than that. Field Day, which happens at Callum's school every year on the first Saturday in May, was 122 years old this year.

Let that sink in for a moment.

I told you it was a Big Deal.

My initial recollection of Field Day was long before Callum was a student at his school. A long ago spring, sitting in my neighbor's yard, as some face-painted kids scampered down the street. My neighbor Jean called out, "Hey, were you at Field Day?!" (she's never afraid to talk to kids), and there you are. Field Day meant wound up boys, face paint and (likely) sugar. Turns out, I wasn't far off! When Callum switched schools, three years ago now, as a new family we were invited to Field Day and welcomed to our new school family with open arms. It's a lovely feeling really. Fortunately, Callum had friends at the school already, so he was off and running while his introverted parents wandered around somewhat bewilderedly. Not much has changed really, but let me tell you more about Field Day.

The entire football field is set up with game and bounce houses (And not the trifling pre-school bounce houses either; these were the super-deluxe bounce houses...grownup ready.) Rimming the Midway (home to the bounce houses and kids games) are food tents, and steps away from the food tents is an SPCA tent and a garden center. Various areas within the school each have their own purpose. The Refectory (the school's cafeteria) houses a bazaar-style gift shop, one of the gyms is home to a giant garage sale. There's an art show and antiques and refurbished furniture for sale. During the day, students perform plays and participate in a Variety Show. In my limited experience none of this changes from year to year, and that's good. Each year has a new theme (Our first year was Wild West, this year was World's Fair), but there are things about Field Day that remain the same year in and year out, and knowing you can count on them is a good good thing.

Tradition!

Like the lemons with the peppermint stick. That's a tradition you can count on.

My personal traditions have always included floppy hats, warm-weather skirts and lots of sunscreen. Not this year. This year it was chilly, and this mist turned to rain as we drove from our house to school. We dropped Callum off and headed straight to Walgreens to get an unbrella. I only got my camera out later in the afternoon. Things felt different under leaden skies, but no less fun. It was harder to run into the people you rarely see all year (that's something I always count on Field Day for!), and I'm sure fewer sno-cones were consumed (Although maybe not. These are kids we're talking about.)

By far the best part of the day comes at the end. Everyone gathers around the Pit (the large concrete area where Middle School boys are forever playing a game called Pit Ball) with the promise of prizes, but first comes the Faculty Follies. Chororegraphed by the school's Dance Master, the faculty entertain everyone. What else can I say besides it's delightful? I never would have seen my English teacher dancing to "Boom Boom Pow," but now Callum can say he has. After the Follies comes the raffle, with its oft-repeated reminders that you must have your ticket to claim your prize and not to sit in the aisles so that the winners can travel up them. The prizes are great. Sea kayak, Kindle fire, Dr. Dre headphones, Stand-up paddleboards. Pretty awesome stuff. Every year someone has their named called, only to discover that they don't have their ticket. Every year several names are called before a prize is claimed. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

At the very end comes one last tradition. Once the final prize is claimed there's a count down and everyone tosses their unclaimed tickets up into the air, carpeting the floor of the pit with a sea of white. It's a joyous, exuberant moment, filled with delight. We drove by later that evening, and it was as if nothing had ever happened that day. Everyone works hard to make the day possible and to clear the whole thing all away.

Tradition.
