It's been a funny weekend. Don't get me wrong, The four-day weekend is awesomesauce and it's always great having my dad here to visit, but on Friday I had a migraine that impacted the whole day. We went grocery store to get stuff for Easter dinner and I couldn't make decisions or commit to anything. Fuzzy headed and feeling crummy. Poor Neel had a 5:15 p.m. meeting Friday night (who does that?) and Callum was feeling overwrought with allergies. It was a funny day. Off. Saturday was better. Fun errands (train store!), spring training games, and dinner at Chow. We came home and dyed eggs. I always dread this, but it was surprisingly fun. Gin helps.
So Sunday. I made my first Dutch Baby, which was awesome. Totally in love and I can't wait to do it again. But that Dutch Baby. I just happened to grab the handle of my oven-proof pan right after it had been in my 450º oven. Not my best moment. I may have mentioned to my son a time or two that it hurt like a son of a bitch. There was some brief talk of going to the Emergency Room, but I shot that idea down pretty sharpish. What could they do for me, really, that I wasn't doing at home already? The pain has eased up, but I was hampered all day. Alfie (my dad) ended up making the lion's share of Easter dinner (even though he denies it), and let's face it, my mood was pretty poor.
Did you have a good weekend? If you celebrate Easter, was it spring-like and nice? Despite all of our my trials, it's been a great weekend though. Isn't it good when you can not be at your best and still have the best of times? That's what it's like when my dad visits. All good. We have one more day together, and we're going to enjoy it to the fullest. And then my mom and her friend Mike comes next weekend! Nothing but blue skies ahead.
Movies watched: four. Zero Dark Thirty, Midnight in Paris, Argo, Skyfall (I'm still gunning for Lincoln, but I'm meeting some resistance.)
Bloody Mary's tested and consumed: uh, 4ish?
Restaurants we've visited: five
Grocery trips: three
Baseball games watched: three, counting Callum's: four
Basketball games watched: bits and pieces of eight including one horrific broken leg which makes my burned hand look like a wax treatment at a spa day. Did you guys see that? Shudder.
Times we've listened to the Midnight in Paris soundtrack. Uh, not enough. Although I think Cal might disagree.

Lauren, I've gotta' say - sounds like a pretty good weekend over all. EXCEPT of course for the burned hand...Ouch! When you count all the bloody mary drinks and restaurant visits AND baseball games watched - it all just balances out, I think. I hope your hand starts to feel better soonest. And yes, I watched that basketball game and saw that horrific injury...I screamed, then started to cry...just thinking about the pain this boy was in, the possible impact on his future made me HURT for him. AND it was an emotional weekend for me too so the tears were RIGHT there just waiting to gush.
Love all the photos. Miss seeing and talking to you. Feeling down, a bit and silly for feeling that when my world is so marvelous and my life so amazing. But it's there, the dark stuff, just lurking - ya' know?
Hugs.
Ahhh, how are you typing? That sounds bloody' terrible. Now, next time if you do go to ER they can give you a burn salve, did you have some? Oh, man burns are literally, most literally the worst pain. Hope it's healing fast! I would never have know from you beautiful instagrams you had both a migraine and a burned hand over the weekend : )
I am with you I just hate dying eggs! I am crafty and I like to get my craft on with almost anything but eggs, I just dread it. This year we didn't get around to it until easter morning which i felt bad about, but turned out it was kind of fun to do it then. Like I said we don't do much so it added a little action time to our day.
I didn't see the broken leg, but I am sure if Fisher finds out about it he will make me watch the video on youtube. I watched two really good movies this weekend. My favorite was The Sessions. Have you seen it? Oh, so good! It is just one of those that I can't stop thinking about, really beautiful film probably not one to watch with Cal though. I mean I wouldn't mind if Fisher watched it, in fact I think it would be a positive thing at his age (15) but I wouldn't want to watch it at the same time. xo
Oi, Lauren, sorry to hear about the head and hand. Those two things would've put me in a terrible mood too. I've been having bad headaches lately and I'm attributing it to the weather. Our day starts off cool and gets progressively warmer as the day wears on; It's as if the weather can't make up its mind. And then it's spring and there's pollen to contend with.
Dutch babies! My mother-in-law makes those for Christmas breakfast and they are so good. She taught me to put a little butter, lemon, and powered sugar on top. It's surprisingly very tasty.
We had a really great Easter weekend, and now the kids are off this week for spring break. Wish us luck! ;)
PS~At the Easter party yesterday, the game was on and we knew something horrible happened when all the men in the room collectively shouted, "Oh!" Shudder is right.
Lauren, it is so wonderful that you and Alfie have such a beautiful relationship! Such a wonderful thing!
So sorry to hear about your head and hand. You poor thing... hope you are feeling better soon.
I love Midnight in Paris, but I haven't heard the soundtrack yet. Will have to check it out.
p.s gin and easter egg dying... you are one clever mama xx
Ouch poor you sweetie! Hope your hand is better. I'm always doing that. However a dutch baby! I had my first one a few months ago with clotted cream ice cream and white peach jam and it was possibly the best thing I've ever tasted. it was served in the cast iron pan. I want to eat it now!
We had easter at my new in laws which was a bump back down to earth. And it was very cold. In fact it still is. Where is spring??
how is your hand healing? keep taking care of it. i didn't need the basketball accident, but read about it. ouch!!
what's a dutch baby? it looks like a pancake with fruit. it looks healthy and delicious.
joy and happy new week! n
There is no way you listened to the Midnight in Paris soundtrack enough. Not at all. Unless you seal yourself in a room and put it on constant repeat and stay in there for a year. Then maybe. Can you tell I'm a bit obsessed with it? It DID win a Grammy this year, you know! And make that family of yours watch Lincoln. It was really, really good. Not as good as Midnight in Paris, but what is?
It sounds like a wonderful, boozy, food filled weekend with family. How can you not love that? Though I'm not a fan of the hand-burning situation, ahem. I love that you all still relish time spent with parents and grandparents. That's inspiring and beautiful to see. Also beautiful? Those Easter Eggs! We were bad and did not make any this year. For a second I thought that first shot of the egg dye was in your blender, and my heart started racing thinking, "how is she going to clean that??!" Whew.
So please do share your recipe for the Dutch Baby. The name of that pastry / dessert / breakfast (???) has always made me giggle a little bit.
