Well this was one of those weekends where we definitely had more good than bad. Way more good. It started Friday with brunch with my friends Marianne and Lisa. And yes. There were bloodys. And yes. There were mani/pedis. I can't tell you how long it's been since I've been with these two smart, sassy and delightful women. Our kids all used to go to school together and since Callum moved schools nearly three years ago now, we kind of lost the thread. I'm so, so happy we've picked it up again. Being with them did me a world of good. And the mani/pedi? I never, ever, ever do that unless it's for a special occasion, and yet it's such a pleasant experience and it feels so nice to have it done. I really should do it more often. It's especially nice to do it with some girlfriends. Lisa and Marianne? I'm putting you in charge of making sure I do more of that. Please and thank you.
Our boys lost a heartbreaker of a game Friday night after battling back to almost tie and afterwards we had a chilly cookout. And that's all we'll say about that.
Finally, finally it was warm enough for me and Neel to enjoy our morning coffee outside on Saturday. (Today is chilly and rainy, so there you are.) We had an odd day because Neel had to give a quick talk at work late in the afternoon and everything we wanted to do had to be worked around that. But the sunshine and the the music wafting over our neighbor's fence was just the best way to start the day. We voted for our sheriff in a primary at a local high school in a total low-tech, drop-your-ballot-in-the-box fashion and it was awesome!
And then Sunday. Birthday redemption, I like to call it. As I told you, Cal's studying Mozart in Music Appreciation, and our Virginia Opera is performing The Marriage of Figaro. We'd just missed the Norfolk weekend, but snuck up to Richmond yesterday to see it there. We decided to make a day of it, and hit our favorite Richmond restaurant, Can Can, while we were there. I'm hoping to post about our day tomorrow, so I won't say much here except: awesome. wonderful. better even than I expected.
Only I wish I were better at walking in heels.

I love reading your blog because it is a reminder that our jobs are not our lives. I love my new career, my 2/3 finished new Master's degree program, and all that brings, but to have brunch with friends, get a mani/pedi on a Friday is such a treat! Lauren, you live the good life. I love the fact that you took your son up to Richmond to see the opera and go out to eat! Blessings- the best, and what's more, you post it and remind us all that we ought to take care of ourselves and have more fun!
I say forget the heels and own your flats-loving ways! I've given up feeling bad about being unable to walk in heels. There are so many studies that prove how bad heels are for your body anyway, and it's harder to break an ankle in a ballet flat ;) Though those wedges of yours are super adorable. And those are easier to manager than stilettos, I think. You have more of a base to support you. Speaking of a supportive base (segue!), those girlfriends of yours seem delightful. A mani/pedi is such a great treat, I'm glad you splurged on yourself. I want to hear/see all about CanCan because it was giving me major Parc flashbacks.
I seriously, seriously, seriously love #12. And #10. A ton!
Oh well that sounds like a nice weekend Lauren and glad you got to redeem your birthday :)
xx
I love seeing your face! I think if we were out together people might ask if we were sisters :) I love heels. I think they are so pretty and feminine but I literally have about 2 hours before it feels like my feet are breaking and I go into panic mode. After a certain point I think I would rather take my chances walking on glass. I just do not understand how women do it all the time. AND they do it pregnant, with twins!! I mean come on, I know that has to be beyond painful. But wedges I can do. I am always a little nervous I might twist my ankle but I can definitely wear them. I love your black ones!! And that pie is killing me. Yum.
mozart, amadeus, and the opera - the marriage of figaro! how wonderful. your family is so cultured, and what perfect timing for cal.
your weekend sounds just lovely. coffee outside - isn't it amazing? it does seem that summer will never really get here, although i might change my mind in the next few days as the weather heats up. today it was jackets and wet outside. also - absolutely, being kind to yourself counts. the whole airline safety talk - put the oxygen over your head so you can help your children, etc. happy new week!
What a fantastic weekend! This whole post is infused with happiness. I can feel it in your words. Oh, and your pretty, smiling face (love #10 and #12)! I'm digging the Kate Spade wedges. I'm a flat girl too, but sometimes it's nice to put on heel; It instantly puts you in a celebratory mood. (Well, until the pain sets in. ;) I'm due for a weekend like this - culture, wonderful music, time with good friends, quality family time, getting gussied up, yummy food, and cocktails. What more can a girl ask for? Can't wait to read more about it. xo
Way more good than bad is awesome!! and photos 10 & 12 love love love!!! xxx
